J Cutta - Mutombo
J Cutta uses hype energy of NBA All Star to power his new single ‘Mutombo’
ATLANTA, GA – During the 1990s and early 2000s, there was one NBA player who dominated on defense. Hailing from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dikembe Mutombo was a force in the paint. Known for his signature phrase “Not in my house,” this 7-foot-2 warrior was best known for his shot-blocking skills. He’d swat away a shot and stuff a jam and then stand over his opponent, wagging his long index finger in their face.
As a young boy growing up in Atlanta watching the professional NBA team The Hawks, Joshua Opoku got to watch Mutombo play a lot of games. To this day, he remembers the smile that would always come across his face when he’d watch Mutombo swat away a shot and say his signature phrase. And today as Opoku works to expand his career as a recording artist, he uses a lot of that energy to push his music forward. Operating under the stage name J Cutta, he’s released his latest song as an homage to the hall of fame NBA star with the single “Mutombo.”
“It’s high energy,” J Cutta said. “It’s a run song – one of those songs that you can work out with at the gym. I wanted to do a high energy song and a tribute, in a sense, at the same time. Mutombo had such a cool catch phrase and I thought it would be cool to incorporate that into the song. It’s just a fun, high-energy song with a catchy hook that includes that catchphrase. It’s definitely a riding song that gets you ramped up.”
J Cutta is a new, innovated face in Hip Hop. A student of music since he was a child, he grew up in Atlanta and embraced the influence of artists such as Nas and Outkast to help mold his creative expression. He’s become known as a lyrical painter who has an ability to transport listeners to a different time and place through his music. People recognize the truth he brings to his music, relating experiences from his own life to share with others.
“I’ve been a fan of music since elementary school and spent a lot of time listening to music to learn how to write my own material,” he said. “I used to listen to songs on the radio and try to write my own lyrics. I thought the way Nas and Outkast put words with a soulful track was art. Being from Atlanta, a lot of people expect to hear 100 percent Trap music. You might hear a little bit of that from me but overall, I’ve got a sound that’s more R&B type of a vibe with Rap fused in. Other songs I do might be more closely related to Drake’s sound or a Cali type of vibe. There are different bits and pieces to my music, and when you hear it, I hope you feel an emotional attachment to it. I hope 10 years from now if you go back and listen to one of my songs, it takes you back to that moment in time and you can remember what you were doing then – it sparks a flashback, nostalgic feeling. With my music, I’m always bringing back some type of memory that’s engraved or tattooed on you.”
J Cutta said he’s working on a bigger project that he plans to release later this year called “Dreams Don’t Die.” Another single, “Fall Thru,” is slated to drop before the summer as a follow-up to “Mutombo” which is currently available across all streaming platforms.
